View Full Version : The next chapter of Guild Wars (expansion packs)

04-29-2005, 12:39 PM
Here's a post (http://guildwars.ogaming.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=7876&st=10&#entry89086) Gaile Gray, ArenaNet Community Relations Manager, made recently over at the GW O'Gaming forums about the next chapter of Guild Wars:

"Just a thought, because there's so much speculation. The next chapter of Guild Wars will be about equal in content to the original chapter. Not "one more measly act" or "another profession" or "a few more skills." It's like another game!"

04-29-2005, 01:51 PM
Great, I am so glad that the expansions/mods are so large. 8)

I just bought the game and was wondering how/what the new chapters would be like.

Wow, I cannot wait.

No! I must finish the first one first!

Sweet. The only problem is they are also as expensive as the current one lol.

Yeah, but it's a one time buy! No monthly fees! Hardly gets better than that.

But with a game that doesn't charge a monthly fee, is it really fair to expect -- even to hope -- that the next chapter will be pennies on the dollar?

For starters, monthly fees are generally associated with MMOGs, which Guild Wars is not. All quests are instanced and towns simply work as social hubs. There is no vast world in which everyone can simultaneously hunt and interact in. There are simply box worlds that people can travel into with limited parties.

I think it is more than fair, given the circumstances. Honestly, I wouldn't pay more than $30 for the next chapter.

Yeah, but it's a one time buy! No monthly fees! Hardly gets better than that.

So instead of getting content monthly, you get content every year or so.. for $50. Whether you like it or not, you are still paying for content in a Diablo II'esque world.

There will still be content updates through streaming but there will be a huge content update every 6-9 months that you do NOT have to purchase. I would personally pay whatever they ask since it is the same a mount of content as the full game. I look at them as more of GW2, GW3 then expansions.

I Take it as this I will not pay to play a gaME once i have bought it FINAL

the £30 for expansion is fine by me i dont have to buy it if i dont need to ,,but i can still play the game free of charge,, this is the clients choice.
On games like camelot and wow you pay a montly upkeep to play the game even tho the content still stays the same,, now this is a RIPOFF. I think arenanet is doing a fine thing already took £100 of me in 3 games and thats how its going to stay if i had done the same of other games itll cost me more now as its nearly up on the month and they want their money. keep up the good work arenanet WE ALL LOVE THE GAME :P

I agree, even if the expansions costs me £50 a year with no monthly subs then as far as I will say they'll get my money every year. I've paid for games in the past and then had to pay monthly fees to play them online meaning so games work out at over £150 a year in cost.

So I've stopped playing the other charge-to-play games, and now well and truly stuck into GW.

In all honesty, I avoided MMO games for the very reason that there was a monthly charge! I only play the buy it and play it games. Though, I do like this one so much, I'll probably get the next chapter.

I feel that if one is going to chareg a monthly fee, then the game should be initially free, or only a few bucks to cover the suppliers handling and middlemen services. Then charge the 10-15 a month. It still isn't for me, but at least it would be fairer, IMHO.

Huzzah! That's why I changed over to GW from WoW. But the entire idea of a expansion that's worth it rocks. Unlike Diablo or other games of that sort where it's 54.11$ down the drain for what's equal to another level, but I would gladly pay that for another entire game. :!:

I've been playing now for three weeks, or so, and I can't get enough of this game. That said, If I had to pay 15 USD a month for it, then I don't know if I could justify the cost from a family man/financial standpoint. I guess it kinda depends on one's priorities.

well.. imagine this.... your paying monthly for GW... then the expansion comes out.. and ya got to pay monthly for that too right? I mean what if you want to play the original AND the expansion.. wouldn't that be 2 monthly fees?

As far as updates go I am sure GuldWars can't be compared to Diablo, the time it took per update on Diablo was the biggest letdown for me, the biggest attraction for me to GuildWars was the promised expansions every 6-9 months and no online charges :D

Though I don't know how they are going to handle keeping me interested in building my character... now can everyone stop posting as I should be out farming as I still need 20k and 200 tan hides for my new armour

in diablo II it wasnt upgrades they called them "patches" because most of the times it wasnt to add sumting to the game but merely fix thechnicalties and remove a bug in the game's system

Well if it'll put your mind at easy, I'll pass along a bit of news that I gleaned about Sorrows furnace............ it's allegedly a free expansion.
I'm not sure how reliable this is, but if it's so, that should take the heat off some of us.

07-21-2005, 11:21 AM
Anyone who is a dev that I know of is listed as such. The fact is, ArenaNet has repeatedly stated that the Summer Update: Sorrow's Furnace is free:

"As part of our commitment to bringing you new content via our free live updates, the first streaming update for Guild Wars offers players access to two extensive new explorable areas: the barren expanse of Grenth's Footprint and the fiery depths of Sorrow's Furnace. You can get a sneak peek at these two areas today, with concept art and a bit of the lore on this page (http://www.guildwars.com/gameinfo/lore/e32005-sorrowsfurnace.html)."

nope.

the way subscription games work, is that you buy the game, which include a CD key, that will activate 1 account. that account costs subscription. Consider it a rent.

you buy the expansion, which includes a CD key, that you can then activate for your account. you still only pay rent once.

compare it to a house. buy a new microwave oven, and you'll still only pay once, and your rent wont go up because of a microwave oven.

Neither. you buy the expansion and play it, period. Once you have it you no longer need to pay for it.
It would be a nasty trick on NCsoft and Arenanets part if they made this a yearly subscription game, but there is nothing in the EULA (end user liscense agreement) that indicates this however, so you're safe.
As far as cost... I understand it to be $30 per expansion (unsure what the conversion to Pounds or Euros is) but it could be higher or lower. I'm sure there is someone here who can give you a somewhat more exact pricing.
But all in all, you needn't worry about Arenanet ripping you off, as they have, thus far, been very honorable and fair in their dealings with the players.
