This is an idea I had to deal with the constant problem of quitters and disconnected players rendering the harder (and longer) missions in the game impossible (or just plain too hard, anyway).
If someone drops during a mission, their character could be immediately replaced by a henchman "copy" -- ie. an npc that is identical to the dropped player. Of course, the AI player won't (usually) be as good as the human player, but it's a heck of a lot better than being shorthanded.
I see one problem: A high level character could offer or charge money to come into a low-level mission, and then leave as soon as it starts; the party is given a high-level henchman to make things easier, maybe too easy.
What do you think? Any way this could work?
