Okay, my first time through the game, I arrive at te gates of Kyrta. Here is where i discover lightning drakes for the first time and was invited on dreak raids. I play as a monk/mes but i keep myself busy with healing. I hardly get any of the loot, does anyone know how the drop system works because ive been notified it was random but i swear it isn't. I think it can be either level based or damage based because i was level 13 with level 15, 16 and 18. and it seemed that the 18 (and also did most of the damage) was getting every other purple. :( Can someone advise me before i throw my puter out the window.

From level 11-16 All I did was drake raid and walked out with 4 purples and 1 yellow. If I had to add it up ide say it must of been at LEAST 30 or 40 raids, and ide also say that at least 5 rares drop each time, so if u add it up there must of been about 100 or so rares, if it were split 4 ways like it should of been, i would of gotten 20 but instead only 5, and hammers and bows at that, the guild needed them but i really need a nice wand and held item (which im using a real POS at the moment). Ive gotten real worked up over this and i need to know the function at which items drop and who gets them because i feel betrayed by this system.

I looked up some referenses, One told me that it was completely random, the other said that the loot was split evenly, so that the loot alternates from person to person; with a 4 person group, i will recieve every 4th drop. can anyone confirm this? Does rare drops work differently?

no it is completely random but the system keeps its even basically, sometimes you luck in sometimes you luck out, though i dont find many good drops from drakes at all but one time i did thirsty river and collected 4 rare items everyone else got a max of one if any. i find it to be the most fair system ive seen but it isnt just who kills it or who can pick it up the quickest

If it's random it's sure doesn't seem that way. I think you should at least have to put some damage on the critter to have any chance at the drops. If it's random it should be random between anyone that actually put damage on the critter or if a henchie put damage on them, random between the players in the team that actually put damage on the creature. I've noticed that if I get the first shot off it seems like I get the drop more often but that could just be my imagination. I don't think I've ever gotten a drop from a critter I didn't put an arrow into, except once there was a beast that ran away and I got the drop. What annoys me is that my ranger hardly ever gets bow drops.....everbody else gets em but not me---waaaahhhhh (LOL).

Loot is random for as long as your party stays within the drawable map on the upper right corner (may be different if you've swapped it's position). When you are alone and your party is out of this map range, you will get all the loot for yourself for every thing that you kill.
If this whole loot thing weren't random, then a certain profession (monks) would be complaining like hell wouldn't you think!? Loot is random and the most fair way to make it. You just gotta be at the right place at the right time.

I have my doubts on " Random" or " even based " drops .. Last night I did the gates of Kryta mission and the same guy ( who also happened to be the party leader ) got the only 2 drops worth a crap 1 Black Dye and a Gold Healing Ahnk. everything else that dropped were clear or lt. Blue weapons, Materials and Gold.. also when I do quests with my other guild members and I'm the party leader I seem to get better drops than they do.... This doesn't seem fair and should be looked into.
I Definatly think that it should be more like a revolving list based drop system so if you where the 4th character you would get every 4th drop and so on !!! that would make it way more even.

The thing that i noticed a few times when i was doing a mission is that different party members would get drops and i didn`t, and i mean not even plain armor anything, but somewhere at the end of the mission i would get the only gold drop.
I think that lootdistro is percentagebased versus playtime, killnumber (let someone else make the formula:) ). Meaning that If you get f.e. 3 gold items, one after the other, you will have to wait some time before you get another.

Yeah, it does seem a little off.
Today I got at least 15 purple items, 5 gold items and lord only knows how many runes. I was only the leader once all day too (so that blows that theory).
Not to mention I have been getting really good drops lately too, I get at least 1 gold a day and a few purple, even whenim in Ascalon
It does seem a little unfair to all the others.

I finally made it to the underworld yesterday .. me and a Group of Trappers Farmed for nearly 2 hours before accidentally aggroing a patrol of Axxtels ** ( Spelling ) and getting the whole party killed.
Out of the 5 of us 1 person got a ( purple ) Storm bow and a ( Gold ) Sword , Another got an Ecto and a ( purple ) armor drop , the 4th guy got a clear weapon not sure what it was but I remember him complaining and ended up leaving the group , I got a clear armor drop that salvaged for 11 hide squares... Hardly seems fair to me. I did however manage to make a good amount of gold so it wasn't a complete loss but I still think the item drops need worked on.

Okay, I offically think that the system is rigged.
In the past 3 days I've gotten obsensely good drops...
2 Black dyes (Plus a load of other colour dyes)
2 Sup Runes
4 Obsidian Shards (My first and only trip to FOW to current date)
At least 10 gold items and
Something like 30 minor or major runes
So that is just unfair and mean to anyone who travels with me.
And between myself and 1 other who was always with me we came to 2 conclusions: 1. I'm one of the luckyest people in Guild Wars (and everyone hates me for it) or 2. the drop system has a serious bug in it somewhere (not that I mind though :D )

Yeah, well i am a monk and i honestly think that the loot system sucks, there are times where it seems to be going really fair, ex: when i went to fissure the first time, it was like perfectly even. I did notice thought that when i do most of the damage, like when with a grp of lower levels, especially wen rushing them, i get almost all of the loot. This leads me to believe(since i have gotten only 1 black dye, that the lot system is based on a few things...
1. dye drops are based on how much dye your charachter has in storage or on hand
2. rare drops are based on how well you are killing things in game, the faster obviously more rare drops(more monsters killed)
3. The system has it in for monks
I based the third one on the fact that i had a monk at lvl 20, couldn't get crap from drops, then i made a warrior on the same account, got him past searing and the drops improved crazily for my monk. It was amazing, though as i said in over 230 hours of play i have gooten 1 black dye this was on a mission in the wilds i believe, and i got it from killing a maguma spider(very weak monster)

hmmm....about your "the better you are doing at killing things the better drops you get" not true. my one friend, lvl 20, and I lvl 16, were killing gypsy ettins, and I got: 2 gold items, 2 purple items, and 3 blue dye. guess what he got? feathered caromi scalps and 4 glowing hearts... and he was the one really doing the work, so it may be unfair, but its not based on who is stronger.

Maybe, just as wild guess that it awards those that suck, to try and improve them, i remeber on the PvP missions in the desert( ireally sucked at them) in one mission i got 4 purple items and one other person got one, so that may be how it works.......But then if this is true why should those who suck get valuable gear. No offense to those who get he good gear, i have not played with you and do not imply that you sck or i am a god, though the latter and former are both prolly right jk
