how come knights armor doesn't look as cool as this in game

You need to crop the image so it's a size that fits as an avatar.

... Something like that. I did a quick crop and then hosted it on the KT Fansite. You could use the KT Forums Gallery to host your Guild Wars pictures, then link to a pic for your avatar.

For some reason, the only avatar feature that seems to work is the "Link to off-site Avatar" which requires your image to be on the internet somewhere so that you can link to the URL.

I am having the exact same issue. I've cropped to fit 150x150, and it seems it takes it (no error messeges) and still red X. Any ideas would be nice.
