I went to war and now i am in a deserty place that used to be the main town where you start at. Is there anyway back to it?

Sorry, there is no way back with that particular character. The area you were in is commonly called the pre-Searing, it's basically the tutorial for Guild Wars. Every new role-playing character you create starts there. The tutorial gives you a glimpse at what the world was like before the horrific Searing, when the Char destroyed Ascalon, at the same time as it teaches you the basics of Guild Wars gameplay.
