Been doing a bit of overclocking to my PC since BF3 came out...trying to get some more performance outta my now 2 yr old rig.

My video card (HIS HD5850) doesn't seem to like it at all. When only running one monitor I can find a stable setting but the performance it gives doesn't warrant the heat it creates. So I leaving it on stock sadly.

My CPU (i5-750) however seems to do great. Lots of stuff to turn on and to turn off and alot of little baby steps, testing along the way, as you other OCers know, but I found a real nice stable 24/7 clock of 3.5 Ghz with on a 1.2 vcore leaving my temps looking great at 60C-65C peaks on full load. Idle is a bit high at 40C-44C but those temps shouldn't shorten the life of my CPU at all. I'm very happy. For reference my cooler is a AVC Closed Loop Liquid CPU Cooling System.

I'm adding 4GB of RAM tomorrow because BF3 sucks it down. Having 8GB of DDR3 running at 1600Mhz is gonna be nice.

Just was wondering if because I am taking up 4 DIMMs now that the draw on the MB will be more and I'll need to find fine tune my OC...

I will of course I'll install and test the new memory on stock clocks first...so we shall see how the OC BIOS setting does...or if I gotta fiddle again.

DD3 RAM is so dirt cheap right now, it's crazy. Just wanted to share.

Was able to keep the overcloack stable by increasing the vcore one notch...pretty sweet

As it turns out...BF3 really doesn't care what CPU you run...even a dual core.

Clock speeds don't matter either, at least not from what I can tell.

It's much more of a GPU dependent game unlike BFBC2.

So for now, I'm keeping stock clocks of 2.8 GHz because they is just no tangible difference in performance but it runs 8-10 degrees cooler at peak.

You made me go and get another rig and i got it from IBuy, got the mod ps after reading about your i5

Edit:
I will be saveing the overclocking profile and then able to switch back and forth between stock and oc, depending on the need.

I fooled aroung attempting to oc my core2q with voltage and adjustments to hz, it never was stable for the stress on the rig. With the multipler unlocked it should be easy like you say, maybe touch up the ram voltage a BIT. It will be fun, real nice bios interface on the mb, all mouseable. i was told the smart responce is faster than a ssd drive.

This is false...lots of info on the web stating so...

I think that can be switched from srt to primary drive. i will play with it.

could i use a second ssd as sr for the first? 2 ssd drives one supporting the other and the conventional 1 t 7200 rpm 32 cash 6 gbs?

I will have 16 g ddr3 ram

No need to use the SRT if you are going to have an SSD as the primary drive...but having a small SSD running in SRT with a HDD as the primary would be a huge improvement over just having the HDD in frequently accessed programs(most benchs show around 70% faster). Futhermore if you were to run 2 HDDs in Raid 0 with a SSD in SRT, im sure it would be quite impressive in overall performance.

have you tryed ready boost?

No

I'm sure you know what it is supposed to do, makes more sense after reading about srt. I think i might try it on a few and see. says can be used on even xp. might get a couple of 32gig flash driver to try

I know that people were using it with some success when playing LOTRO...

I personally have never tried it though. Seems to be designed to be a "cheap upgrade" for low-RAM systems.

I don't think you would have any gains on a system with over 2 GB of RAM. The more RAM that's installed, the less Windows needs to use the swapfile (or ReadyBoost).

But try it out if you want and lemme know how it goes.

EDIT: From a little research, it looks as tho it would be useless and disabled if the primary drive is a SSD anyway...

I've always found it easier to OC Nvidia cards.

That's a modest OC on your i5. I ran my Core2Duo at 3.6 Ghz (stock @ 3.0) on a cheap after market air cooler for a while. But, like you, I found that the improvement in gaming performance wasn't even noticeable.

It doesn't seem like clock speeds matter these days. A poorly coded game will always run like crap.
