when you take damage, does it hit your armor as a whole, or individual pieces?

Individiual pieces...for example the hammer skill belly smash always hits the torso

for other skills and just general attacks, is it random which part they hit?

There is a different chance for each part of the armor to get hit.The chestpiece is most likley to get hit.

Arms 12.5%
Head 12.5%
Feet 12.5%
Legs 25.0%
Torso 37.5%

These are the specific percentages.

If you are being struck from ontop of a ledge.. Like by an archer, elementalist and so forth.. You will be strucked in the head.. But for everything else it follows these percentages.

what about if your weapon has +defense? what does that apply to?

ok.. Mods that are in the armor already are unique too that armor piece, in the sense that it only effects that armor piece. But if you add a rune to it.. Like a superior rune of Absorbtion... That absorbtion is global in the sense that it is put into effect no matter where you get hit.

so i assume that if you have a weapon with +def that it is global. cuz its not like the weapon needs the protection

Well yes technicaly.. If you have a weapon with def mods on it... It stacks them too the armor piece that's beign attacked at that spefic moment.. Same thing goes for shields.. So yes its global.
