bow upgrades

is there any other way of etting bow upgrades besides salvenging it from items

like from a merchant

nope salvage and or player economy

I had a purple bow with a lightning string, I used the expert salvage pack on it and it disappeared. Did I do something wrong or is this just what happens when the salvage fails? I would think at least a message saying sorry charlie should pop up? Thanks for helping the newb.
