Adrenaline
Some skills require adrenaline, meaning that they are not active until the character has been involved in combat for a period of time. Adrenaline skills become brightly lit when active.
Adjacent
An area of effect that equals 156 inches from the target point. This is the smallest area of effect.
Arrow
Projectile fired from a bow.
A term used in skill descriptions to indicate that the strike type is projectile.
Attack
A melee or projectile skill.
A term used in skill descriptions to indicate that the strike type is melee or projectile.
Bleeding
A Condition that causes slow Health degeneration.
Blindness
A Condition that causes your attacks to have a 90% chance to miss.
Buff
A skill (enchantment) that strengthens other skills or attributes.
Burning
A Condition that causes rapid Health degeneration.
Condition
A temporary, negative state inflicted by an enemy (e.g., poison, disease, weakness, blindness, silence, and so on).
Crippled
When suffering from this Condition, your movement is slowed by 50%.
Critical hit
A hit that strikes a vital area and therefore does more damage (140% extra damage) than normal.
Damage
Loss of Health; any skill that causes damage results in loss of Health to the target.
Dazed
When suffering from this Condition, your spells take twice as long to cast and are easily interrupted.
Debuff
A skill (hex) that weakens other skills or attributes.
Deep Wound
When suffering from this Condition, your maximum Health is reduced by 20% (maximum 100 points) and Healing is 20% less effective.
Direct damage
Damage done directly to the target, without traveling through the world and without striking the target’s armor.
Diseased
A Condition that causes Health degeneration and can be spread easily to nearby creatures.
Elite
A type of skill, of which each player can have only one in the skill bar at any given time.
Enchantment Spell
A spell that causes a temporary state of protection or enhancement (e.g., speed, increased armor, increased Energy). A positive effect that stays with the target and benefits him over time. (buff)
Enchantment
The result of an Enchantment Spell (e.g., increased Energy, increased running speed, Health increase over time, and so on).
Energy
The resource that allows characters to use skills, Energy is measured in points, which are gauged in the blue Energy bar at the bottom of the Guild Wars window.
Exhaustion
Temporarily lowers maximum Energy.
Glyph
A type of skill that enhances the next spell you cast. Glyphs affect only spells.
Health
The resource that maintains life, Health is measured in points, which are gauged in the red Health bar at the bottom of the Guild Wars window.
Hex Spell
A spell that causes a negative effect for a period of time (e.g., preventing the target from using certain skills, slowing skill recharge rates, causing the target to lose Health or Energy over time, and so on). (debuff)
In the location
An area of effect that is equal to 312 inches. This is the largest possible area of effect.
Holy damage
Damage that ignores armor. Deals double damage to undead.
Knock down
A skill that knocks the target to the ground. When knocked down, the target cannot move, use any skills, or cast any spells.
Melee
1. Close-range combat with a sword, hammer, or axe. 2. A term used in skill descriptions to indicate that the strike type is melee.
Nature Ritual
A type of skill that involves manipulating the environment to create an enchantment that affects allies and foes alike.
Nearby
An area of effect that is equal to 240 inches.
Poison
A Condition that causes Health degeneration.
Preparation[/b]
A skill that “prepares” the target to attack more effectively for the next few seconds.
Protection spells
Spells that help protect you and your allies from harm.
Resurrect
Bring back from death. In addition to the Resurrection Signet, which every profession owns, certain spells can resurrect players (self or allies). Some missions feature priests or Resurrection Circles that revive players every two minutes.
Ring
Most skills come in the form of a ring to be worn on the character's finger, which is why one can take only 8 skills into battle.
Shout
A motivational phrase that benefits your party (as well as hindering any nearby enemies). Shouts generally last a few seconds and cannot be removed.
Signet
A Signet is a ring containing a skill that does not require Energy to use.
Skill
A term that encompasses all abilities, i.e., spells, enchantments, rings, signets.
Snare
A movement-hindering skill.
Spell
A skill that results in an instant effect, such as damage, healing, Energy loss, or Energy gain.
Stance
A state of being (a position, movement, or posture) that provides an advantage in battle, either by protecting against attacks or improving your offensive abilities.
Strike
The act of a skill hitting an enemy; a strike can result from a projectile or melee attack, or any skill that takes armor into account.
Strike damage
Damage resulting from a strike; strike damage takes into account armor and the level of the attacker, and is generally directed at a specific body part.
Target
1. The enemy you are attacking, or the enemy or ally on which you wish to cast a spell. 2. A term used in skill descriptions to indicate that the skill is “targeted,” i.e., that the caster must click on a target enemy or ally before casting.
Target ally
In skill descriptions, indicates that the skill affects any ally (including yourself) you target by clicking. Target can be a party member or other ally.
Target corpse
In skill descriptions, this term indicates that the skill affects any corpse you target by clicking.
Target creature
In skill descriptions, this term indicates that the skill affects any living creature you target by clicking.
Target enemy
In skill descriptions, this term indicates that the skill affects any enemy you target by clicking.
Target other ally
